# Email Campaigns

> Send a newsletter or promotion to your customers, an audience, a form collection or a pasted list, through your own sending account. Test it, send it now or schedule it, then read the report.

An email campaign is one email sent to many people at once: a newsletter, a launch, a sale. It goes out through
a sending account your brand owns, and every copy carries an unsubscribe link.

Open **Campaigns** in the sidebar. The list shows email and SMS campaigns together, with tabs for **Drafts**,
**Scheduled**, **Sending**, **Sent** and **Failed or canceled**. Click **New campaign**, then **Email broadcast**.
If SMS is not on for your brand, the email composer opens straight away.

The composer has four steps: **Audience**, **Content**, **Settings** and **Review and send**. Your draft saves
as you go.

## Before your first campaign

* **A sending account.** Campaigns only go out through an account you own: Amazon SES, Postmark, Brevo,
Resend, Mailgun, SendGrid, Mailrelay, or your own SMTP server from **Settings → Emailing**. ElasticFunnels
never falls back to its own servers for a campaign. See [Email Sending Accounts](/emails/sending-accounts).
* **Delivery stats (optional).** Opens, clicks and bounces are counted only when the account reports them back.
  See [Delivery stats](#delivery-stats-and-the-campaign-settings-page) below.
* **Your postal address (recommended).** It goes in the footer of every campaign email.

## 1. Audience

![Email campaign, Audience step: who gets the campaign, the consent rule and the count of people who will receive it](https://mintcdn.com/elasticfunnels-8a91cd9d/QN6efBuLnIIDxKvk/images/campaigns/email-audience.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=QN6efBuLnIIDxKvk\&q=85\&s=68febce649b406f5c7e96dc8aea827aa)

Under **Who gets this campaign**, pick one:

| Option | Who it reaches |
| - | - |
| **All customers** | Everyone who has bought from this brand |
| **An audience** | People in one of your saved [Audiences](/analytics/audience-actions), as of its last refresh |
| **A collection or CRM list** | Leads from a form collection or a CRM entity, using the entry's email field |
| **A list of addresses** | Addresses you paste, one per line or separated by commas (up to 10,000) |

The **Will receive this campaign** card counts who is left once ElasticFunnels removes:

* **Left out: said no to emails**: people who saw the email opt-in box at checkout and left it unticked.
* **Left out: unsubscribed or bounced**: everyone on your [suppression list](#suppression-list).
* **Duplicates removed**: the same address twice.

Everyone else is included, as the step says: "Everyone is included unless they unticked the email opt-in box
at checkout, unsubscribed, bounced or complained." Buyers with no opt-in record, such as sales from BuyGoods or
ClickBank or checkouts without the box, count as included. You are responsible for having permission to email
the people you send to. How the box is recorded: [Privacy & consent](/pages/privacy-consent#checkout-email-opt-in).

> [!NOTE]
>
> The suppression list and the opt-in record are checked again for each person at the moment their email goes
> out, so someone who unsubscribes from an earlier email after you launch is still skipped.

## 2. Content

![Email campaign, Content step: the email preview with the automatic footer, and the edit buttons](https://mintcdn.com/elasticfunnels-8a91cd9d/QN6efBuLnIIDxKvk/images/campaigns/email-content.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=QN6efBuLnIIDxKvk\&q=85\&s=cdd3805775b5805c6097820728b87c40)

Start from **The default layout**, **A template** or **An earlier campaign**. Then use **Edit design** for the
drag-and-drop builder, **Edit HTML** for the code, or **Replace content** to start again. The preview shows the
email as it is sent, with your name in place of the recipient's, on **Desktop** or **Mobile**.

Editing campaign content is covered in [Building an email](/emails/builder#emails-that-belong-to-a-campaign).

### The footer and unsubscribe link

ElasticFunnels adds a footer to every campaign email with your postal address, the line "You are receiving this
because you signed up for emails from (your brand)." and an **Unsubscribe** link. It is left out only when your
template already prints both the unsubscribe link and the postal address.

Every email also carries the `List-Unsubscribe` and one-click `List-Unsubscribe-Post` headers, so Gmail, Apple
Mail and other inboxes can show their own unsubscribe button.

The link opens a page in your brand's colour with one confirm button. Opening the page changes nothing; the
person is unsubscribed when they confirm (or when their inbox uses one-click unsubscribe). From then on they get
no campaigns and no marketing automations from your brand. Receipts and other transactional emails still go out.

## 3. Settings

![Email campaign, Settings step: sending account, sender fields, subject and preview text](https://mintcdn.com/elasticfunnels-8a91cd9d/QN6efBuLnIIDxKvk/images/campaigns/email-settings-step.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=QN6efBuLnIIDxKvk\&q=85\&s=4c3b5dbe8c1b75e6501dc1a197141f1c)

| Field | What to enter |
| - | - |
| **Send through** | The sending account. New campaigns start with your default account. |
| **From name** | The name inboxes show |
| **From address** | Leave empty to use the account's sender. The domain must be verified with your sending account. |
| **Reply-to address** | Where replies go, if not to the from address |
| **Subject** | Use **Insert:** to add **First name**, **Full name** or **Brand name** |
| **Preview text** | Shown after the subject in most inboxes |

The same step holds the optional **A/B test** panel, which sends several subjects or versions to a test group
and the best one to everyone else. See [A/B testing a campaign](/campaigns/ab-testing).

## 4. Review and send

![Email campaign, Review and send: summary, postal address warning, test send and schedule](https://mintcdn.com/elasticfunnels-8a91cd9d/QN6efBuLnIIDxKvk/images/campaigns/email-review.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=QN6efBuLnIIDxKvk\&q=85\&s=2745d9e00810769dbeaf78553f4f4e6b)

1. Fix anything the step lists as missing: a subject, the content, an audience, a sending account, or a from
address when the account has no default sender.
2. Under **Send a test**, enter one address (yours is filled in) and click **Send test**. The test is the real
email, footer included. Clicking its unsubscribe link changes nothing. You can send 10 tests per campaign
   per hour.
3. Under **When**, pick **Send now**, or **Schedule for later** with a date and time in the brand's time zone.
The time must be at least a minute ahead.
4. Click **Send to (number) people** and confirm.

If you have not sent yourself a test, ElasticFunnels asks first: "You have not sent yourself a test of this
campaign." Choose **Send it without a test** to go ahead anyway.

**Recommended: add your postal address** shows when the brand has none. Anti-spam laws (CAN-SPAM in the US, for
example) require one in marketing emails. The campaign still goes out without it, and the footer leaves the line
out.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Once a campaign starts, you can stop the rest with **Stop sending**, but emails already sent stay sent. A
> scheduled campaign can be moved back to a draft with **Unschedule** until its send time.

### How fast it sends

Recipients go out in batches of 250, paced to your sending account's limit per minute:

| Sending account | Emails per minute |
| - | - |
| Amazon SES, Postmark, Brevo, Mailgun, SendGrid | 300 |
| Resend | 100 |
| Mailrelay, your SMTP server | 60 |

## The report

![Email campaign report: stats, people left out, most clicked links and the recipients list](https://mintcdn.com/elasticfunnels-8a91cd9d/QN6efBuLnIIDxKvk/images/campaigns/email-report.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=QN6efBuLnIIDxKvk\&q=85\&s=0ddeeb7297253729a5b91dc01e9604fc)

Click a sent or sending campaign in the list to open its report.

| Card | What it counts |
| - | - |
| **Recipients** | People the campaign was sent to, with how many failed |
| **Sent** | Emails handed to your sending account, with how many were delivered |
| **Opened** | Share of recipients who opened it |
| **Clicked** | Share of recipients who clicked a link |
| **Bounced** | Bounces, with spam complaints counted underneath |
| **Unsubscribed** | People who unsubscribed from this campaign |

Below the cards you see who was left out and why, the **Most clicked links** (top 10) and the recipients list.
Filter recipients by **All**, **Opened**, **Clicked**, **Bounced**, **Unsubscribed** or **Failed**, or search
for an address. **Open send logs** shows the delivery log for each email. **Duplicate** copies the campaign
into a new draft.

The email report does not show revenue. To see sales from a campaign, add UTM tags to its links and read them
in your analytics.

### Delivery stats and the campaign settings page

![Campaign settings: sending accounts with stats status, and the postal address](https://mintcdn.com/elasticfunnels-8a91cd9d/QN6efBuLnIIDxKvk/images/campaigns/email-sending-accounts.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=QN6efBuLnIIDxKvk\&q=85\&s=ca7b3d4cd10fb5328775fcfb2d847319)

Opened, clicked, bounced and unsubscribed come from your sending account's webhook. Campaigns send without it,
but those numbers stay at zero. Open **Settings** under **Email** in the Campaigns menu:

* **Sending accounts** lists each account. **Make default** sets the one new campaigns start with.
* **Set up stats** on Mailgun and SendGrid connects the webhook for you, or lets you paste the key by hand.
Postmark, Resend, Brevo and Amazon SES get their webhook when you save the account.
* Mailrelay and SMTP servers show **No delivery stats from this account**: emails go out, but opens and clicks
  are not counted.
* **Postal address** is printed in the footer of every campaign email.

More on webhooks: [Delivery events](/emails/delivery-events).

## Suppression list

Open **Suppression list** under **Email** in the Campaigns menu. No campaign is ever sent to these addresses.

| Tab | How addresses get there | Can you remove them? |
| - | - | - |
| **Unsubscribed** | The unsubscribe link, one-click unsubscribe, or an unsubscribe your sending account reports | No, they show as **Kept** |
| **Bounced** | Hard bounces your sending account reports | Yes |
| **Spam complaint** | Complaints your sending account reports | No |
| **Added by you** | **Add addresses**: one per line, or separated by commas | Yes |

The list covers the whole brand, so it also keeps these people out of marketing automations.

## Statuses

| Status | Meaning |
| - | - |
| **Draft** | Not launched. You can edit it. |
| **Scheduled** | Waiting for its send time. **Unschedule** turns it back into a draft. |
| **Sending** | Going out now. **Stop sending** cancels the rest. |
| **Sent** | Finished |
| **Failed** / **Canceled** | Stopped by a problem, or by you. Both show under **Failed or canceled**. |
