Every email template opens in one of two editors. The Visual Builder is a drag-and-drop canvas made for email: its blocks are built from tables, so they look the same in Gmail, Outlook and Apple Mail. The Code Editor is a plain HTML editor for people who would rather write the markup. You choose one when you create the template, and both are in each row’s menu in the template list (Settings → Apps → Emails). Click a template’s name in the list to open it. The editor opens in a new browser tab, so the list stays where you left it.

The parts of the builder

  • The canvas in the middle is the email itself, shown on the email’s own background color. Double-click any text to type in it, click an image or a button to select it.
  • The left bar holds the blocks panel, layers, your files, fonts, brand colors and the Email Variables panel.
  • The style panel on the right changes the selected element: colors, spacing, font size, alignment, the link of a button.
  • The top bar has the desktop, tablet and mobile view buttons, undo and redo, and Save. The gear button opens the template settings: name, subject, preview text, sender and versions.
  • The (i) button in the left bar opens About this email. For a template it shows the subject, preview text, sender, whether the template is sending and why, what uses it and the saved version, with a button to edit the subject and sender. For a campaign email it shows the campaign, its status, subject, preview text and the sender the send will use, with a button that saves and takes you to the campaign settings.

Add a section

A small + marker sits between the sections of the email, and above the first and below the last. Move the pointer near one and it opens into an Add section here line.
1

Click Add section here

Pick the gap where the new section should go and click the line (or the +).
2

Choose a block

A picker opens with Text, Image, Button, Two columns, Divider, Spacer, Social links, Logo, Footer and Custom HTML. Click one and it is inserted at that spot.
3

Edit it in place

The new section is selected. Type over the sample text, change the image, set the button link in the style panel.
The markers only exist in the editor. They are never saved into the email and never reach an inbox. You can also drag blocks from the blocks panel onto the canvas. The Email elements group holds the same blocks as the picker.

The email blocks

Blocks that only work on web pages, such as frontend template engine blocks, Include Component, Extends Layout, Block and Backend Script, are not offered in the email builder. The backend If/Else, Foreach and Set blocks are there, for conditional content.

Your own HTML

There are two ways to bring in markup of your own:
  • Custom HTML block. Pick Custom HTML from an Add section here line, or drag the HTML Block onto the canvas, then click it and paste your code. The canvas shows the result rendered, as it will look in the inbox. Scripts do not run in email, in the builder or in any mail client.
  • Edit HTML on any element. Right-click an element and choose Edit HTML, or select it and press Ctrl+E (Cmd+E on a Mac). Change the markup and the element is redrawn with your change.
For a whole email written by hand, use the Code Editor instead: create the template with Code Editor as its editor, or open an existing template with Code from its row menu. It has syntax highlighting and a Format code button, and Ctrl+S / Cmd+S saves.

Variables

Variables put the customer’s details into the email when it is sent: {{ purchase.customer_first_name }} becomes “Jane”. Which variables a template can use depends on its type (the Variable scope in the template settings): a Purchase template has the order, a Renewal reminder has the subscription. Click the Email Variables button in the left bar to see the list for this template. Click a variable to copy it, then paste it into the text. Pin the panel to keep it open while you write. If the panel says no variables are available, set a Variable scope in the template settings first. Variables work in the subject and preview text too. The full list is on Template Variables.

Conditional content

Show a section only when the data is there, with @if:
Repeat a block for each product in the order with @each:
Put these in a Custom HTML block, or use the If/Else and Foreach blocks from the blocks panel.

Check it before it goes out

  • Mobile. Use the desktop, tablet and mobile buttons in the top bar to see the email at each width. Most email is read on a phone.
  • A real inbox. Save, go back to the template list (Settings → Apps → Emails), open the template’s row menu and click Send test. Type the address to send it to. The test goes out through your brand SMTP, or through one of your email integrations when the brand has no SMTP, so it also shows whether your sender works.
  • What was sent. Every send, tests included, is listed in Settings → Logs → Email Logs, with the template version it used. Open send logs in the info panel opens it filtered to this template.

Save

Click Save in the top bar. Saving changes to the subject, sender or content creates a new version of the template, and the old one stays readable under Versions. See Versions. Changes reach customers from the next email that is sent. Emails already sent are not changed.

Emails that belong to a campaign

When campaigns are on for your brand, each campaign has its own email, edited in the same builder.
  • A new campaign starts on a default layout: your brand name, a headline, a short text, a button and a footer with your postal address and the unsubscribe link. Edit it in place instead of starting from an empty page.
  • On the campaign’s Content step, Edit design opens the email in the Visual Builder and Edit HTML opens it in the Code Editor. Replace content starts over from A template, An earlier campaign or The default layout. Replacing changes only this campaign; your templates stay as they are.
  • In the builder, Continue to settings next to Save saves the email and takes you to the campaign’s Settings step, where you set the sender, the subject and your postal address. Back to campaign returns to the Content step.
  • The subject field in Settings has buttons to insert First name, Full name and Brand name.
  • Keep the unsubscribe link and your postal address in the email. If either is missing when the campaign is sent, ElasticFunnels adds a short footer with them.
  • On the Review and send step, Send test sends the email to you first, with your name in place of the recipient’s.
